Special rules for hand luggage

Special rules apply to your hand baggage. Liquids, gels and aerosols in hand baggage may only be carried in small quantities (max. 100 ml each) and properly packed. This applies to all passengers departing from or transferring to an airport within the European Union.

New rules

The new rules apply to liquids such as water and other drinks for consumption. It also applies to gels, pastes, lotions and the contents of aerosols. So toiletries such as toothpaste, shaving cream, hair gel, lip gloss and creams are also covered.

These are the rules for liquids in your hand luggage:

1. You can only carry liquids and gels in containers of no more than 100 millilitres
2. These containers may only be carried in a transparent plastic bag
3. One transparent plastic bag may be carried per person
4. The transparent plastic bag must not exceed 1 litre in size
5. The clear plastic bag must be resealable

You can bring a suitable clear plastic bag from home.

There are two exceptions:
A. Baby food, which you need during the flight.
B. Medicines, which you need for the duration of the trip (= flight and stay abroad).

For the exact rules on this, also check the website of the central government.

Purchases at airports and on board
After ticket and/or passport control, you can still make (tax-free) purchases at European airports and on board a European airline. Liquids and gels bought after ticket and/or passport control or on the plane will be packed and sealed for you by the shop or on board - if necessary. The seal is valid for one day. If you have to transfer at a subsequent airport, you may not break the seal until you arrive at your final destination.

Offering your hand baggage separately
At the cabin baggage check, you must present all liquids separately. As for the transparent plastic bag, the containers must fit inside it easily and the bag must be closed. You must also present coats, jackets and large electrical appliances, such as laptops, separately at the cabin baggage check.
