Travel documents

Always make sure you have a valid travel document with you. That way you can leave smoothly.

Due to identification requirements, you should always bring a valid passport or European identity card when travelling. If you want more information on travel documents, it is best to ask your travel consultant. All children must have their own ID card or passport. Supplementary passports are no longer valid.

Apply for a passport or identity document well in advance!
Keep in mind that applying for a travel document takes several days. On average, it takes five working days before you can collect your travel document.

Express procedure
To apply for a passport, you can also use the urgent procedure at your municipality. In that case, you can usually collect your travel document from the Citizens' Affairs Department on the next working day, provided you submit your application in time. Check with your own municipality.

For some countries, besides a valid passport, you also need a visa. If you want to stay there but also if you are just travelling through this country. Some countries have requirements on the period of validity of the travel document before issuing a visa.

The Royal Military Police can issue an emergency passport in exceptional cases if strict conditions are met. Not everyone is always eligible for an emergency passport. Each application is assessed individually at the desk in the terminal. For more information about an emergency document, please call the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee at Groningen Airport Eelde: tel. 088-9512154

If your passport is stolen or lost at Groningen Airport Eelde, this constitutes a security risk for you and others. You should therefore report it to the Royal Netherlands Military Constabulary at the airport as soon as possible.

For your own health and safety, you sometimes need a medical certificate from your doctor to fly. This medical certificate states that you are healthy enough to travel in a pressurised cabin and/or that you need to travel with medical baggage.

This statement must be issued by an independent doctor.

Before departure, check the rules on this with the airline you are flying with.
