New course Aircraft Maintenance will start in September 2026 at Groningen Airport Eelde

Starting in September 2026, a new Aviation Maintenance course will start at Groningen Airport Eelde, a collaboration between Necamco and Groningen Airport Eelde. This program addresses the growing demand for certified aviation technicians in the Netherlands. Both civilian aviation companies and the Defense sector face structural shortages, while a significant portion of the current workforce is set to retire in the coming years.

The training program is a collaboration and focuses on young people from northern Netherlands who want to develop into certified maintenance technicians. Over the course of a year and a half, students complete all thirteen EASA Part 66 B1.1 modules, allowing them to apply for an Aircraft Maintenance License. After gaining the required practical experience and additional type ratings, they can officially certify and release aircraft maintenance.

The program aligns with vocational education programs at Noorderpoort, Alfa College, DCTerra, and Firda. Students who have completed a level 4 technical vocational education can directly enroll in the program. Together with northern educational institutions, efforts are made in information and orientation, allowing students to become acquainted with this career path early on.

The dual learning path comprises two days of theoretical study and three days of practical training per week. All students can transition to a position within the sector upon graduation.

The theoretical lessons are provided by the Aircraft Maintenance & Training School. The Airport Campus at Groningen Airport Eelde is the center of learning environment, housing the KLM Flight Academy and programs like aviation service and Drone Operations Specialist (also starting in September 2026). The campus offers students a context-rich learning environment where theory and practice converge.

The start of this course marks an important step towards strengthening the aviation cluster in northern Netherlands. Alongside Necamco, several companies are stationed at Groningen Airport Eelde, such as Skyline Aviation and the KLM Flight Academy, where adequately certified aviation technicians are crucial. The program contributes to retaining young talent in the region and supports the aviation sector's continuity and safety.
