Electric power supply for aircraft: e-GPU in use at Groningen Airport Eelde

Groningen Airport Eelde (GAE) is making strong progress on sustainability, particularly on the ground. An important step in this process is the introduction of an electric Ground Power Unit, or e-GPU, an electrically powered device that supplies aircraft with power while they are on the ground. The e-GPU has been part of daily operations since this week.

In 2024, more than 50 percent of CO₂ emissions from handling operations at GAE were attributable to diesel GPUs, based on the number of litres of fuel used. The e-GPU performs the same function, but is fully electric and emission-free. This means no local CO₂ or particulate matter emissions, less noise, and therefore a better working environment for staff. Energy consumption is also lower due to the higher efficiency of electric systems. “The e-GPU is part of the NXT Airport programme, which focuses on making the airport more sustainable. We are taking a phased approach, starting by electrifying the functions that deliver the greatest reduction in emissions and noise,” says Jeroen Kamphuis, NXT Airport project leader.

More electric equipment on the way

Later this year, the next step will follow: the delivery of a second electric belt loader. Next year, we will expand further with an electric ambulift for passengers with reduced mobility. “This further electrification of our ground equipment makes it possible to handle an aircraft with virtually no emissions. These investments are making our ground operations increasingly sustainable, which we are very pleased about,” says Wessel Rijkens, Manager Handling at GAE.

First with hydrogen

In 2023, GAE achieved a world first with the presentation of the first hydrogen-powered GPU. Together with the e-GPU, the electric belt loader, and the existing electric baggage tractors and baggage stairs, it symbolises a future-proof, emission-free airport.
